Review: Nivea Post Shave Balm

I am probably the last girl in the beauty blogging world to jump on the bandwagon with regards to this product. I’m sure you all know that it started with Nikkie Tutorials who used this as a face primer one day and said it’s the best primer she’s ever used. Since then pretty much every beauty blogger has claimed the same thing so I thought it was time I give it a go!

I’ve tried my fair share of different primers to stop my makeup from sliding off my face throughout the day but I still haven’t found that ‘one’ yet. I thought that this would work well for me due to the high content of glycerin in it which effectively makes your foundation stick to your skin, therefore your makeup will last all day long! And as well as that the balm also contains 0% alcohol which is great for certain skin types as it doesn’t irritate or dry the skin out. So for just under £5.00 from Asda I thought I might as well give it a try and if I found that it didn’t work for me, I would just give it to my dad or boyfriend anyway.

Not only does the balm ‘apparently’ create the perfect base for flawless makeup it also has added ingredients of witch hazel and chamomile which aid in helping restore, repair and reduce redness of the skin.

It comes in a bulky glass bottle with a screw lid, I wasn’t expecting a pump or anything fancy as this is a man’s facial product after all. The balm is a sticky, thick sort of consistency, but it’s also quite runny. With regards to the smell it has that ‘man’ smell to it but it wasn’t overpowering, however I was paranoid people could smell it on me!

I would do my skin care routine as normal and then apply the Post Shave Balm – it feels really smooth and cool against the skin and you have to smooth it in until it becomes ‘tacky’. Once I had that texture I then would apply my foundation which I thought I would have trouble blending it in, but it went on with such ease. For the first half of the week after checking my makeup around 1 o’clock, the usual problems that would occur, such as patchiness, hadn’t happened. I then would check my makeup again once I got home, and although I was a bit shiny on my forehead, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well my makeup had stayed on!

However, the second half of the week I started to notice the usual problems occurring again. I tried to use less product, more product, left it to sink in longer before applying my foundation, applied it with and without moisturiser – but nothing. Annoyingly I just couldn’t seem to get the same results as the first week.

So after having worn this under my foundation for the past week, I’m in two minds about it. Does anyone have any other tips on how to apply this to get the best results?
